Kohler confidant 7 generator takes longer than it should to start?

i kohler confidant 7 generator it is 10 years old, it has a remote start feature (being used in a camper). whenever i start the generator, i have to hold down the start button for a long time. if i release it too soon it wont start. what could be causing this. i was told it could be the choke. how would i fix this?

Thank you|||With the engine shut off remove the air filter and see what position the choke is in. Make sure that it closes all the way. I assume it is a manual choke. It also could be that the carburetor needs cleaning.|||The "Fix" will be different if it is an LP generator or a gasoline generator.

If it is LP, I would look for a leak in the fuel lines. If there is a leak, the fuel line will fill with air while the unit is shut off.

If it is a gasoline unit, make sure to hit the prime button before cranking the unit. If that does not work, I would take a look at the choke flap, under the air cleaner. The choke is thermostatic, which means that it closes when it is cold, and opens when it is hot. Do your diagnostics when the generator is cold. The choke should be closed, or at least partially closed. This will depend on temperature.

It is also possible that the unit is just plain worn out. 10 years on a little generator is a lot of service. Most air cooled engines are only good for a few hundred hours of operation. Even the best are only good for 1000 hours or so. Depending on how well it is maintained, the life can range from 100 hours to 3000 hours.
